Game Project

Road Less Travelled

Road Less Travelled is a survival road trip by Otisco Studios. Players drive a battered camper through foggy, rain-soaked forest roads at night, then stop to camp, scavenge abandoned homesteads, and craft the gear, weapons, tools, armor, and vehicle upgrades needed to survive.

I developed the enemy AI, programming the logic behind the creatures watching from the treeline. I left the studio for other opportunities before development was complete, but the game is available on Steam!

Enemy Tokens

I developed AI for both flying and ground-based enemies, including special effects such as enemies grabbing the player.

To prevent enemies from overwhelming the player, I implemented a token system that regulates how many can attack at once. Each enemy consumes a set number of the player's tokens when attacking, and can only attack if enough tokens are available. The tokens are returned afterward.

The Beak, the game's simplest enemy, hunts in packs, with each creature taking its turn attacking while remaining easy to dodge.

Advanced AI

I also developed a clown enemy that was cut from the final game. It stalked the player by moving between cover, gradually closing the distance. Once close enough, it would emerge to attack before retreating to cover and repeating the cycle.

Flying Enemies

Flying enemies presented a navigation challenge because navigation meshes are not well suited to their movement. I adapted the AI to support flying movement while retaining the token system.

These enemies also have multiple attacks, including a stronger attack that immobilizes the player on impact but consumes more tokens.
